INFOPOINT

THE STATE NATURE RESERVE AND PROTECTED MARINE AREA OF THE "ISLANDS OF VENTOTENE AND SANTO
STEFANO 91 b – 15 P
567 b – 80 P
Thanks to the establishment of the Protected Area, the island's territory is environmentally preserved. The island of Ventotene, an ideal place for divers and a nesting area for the Loggerhead sea turtle, has been awarded the 'Blue Flag' on several occasions.
The plants that grow on the island are valuable food for migratory birds. The bird ringing station on the Reserve, coordinated by the Istituto Superiore per la Protezione e la Ricerca Ambientale (Institute for Environmental Protection and Research), recognises and records them; the routes followed during migration are then described in the Ornithological Museum

THE MARIO MAOVAZ LIBRARY 27 b – 4 P
495 b – 75 P
During the period of confinement, between 1932 and 1943, the Ventotene library made it possible to nurture study and research, the sharing of culture, exchange of ideas and experiences that gave rise to a veritable political laboratory, defined by many as the Proletarian University. The library has over ten thousand volumes on the Bourbons, the history of pre-unification Southern Italy, the Pontine Islands, the period of Confinement and the development of the idea of a united Europe.
THE VESTIGES OF IMPERIAL ROME 33 B – 5 P
587 b – 91 P
Ventotene was chosen by Octavian Augustus as the site of one of his leisure villas, which over time was enlarged and redeveloped, including a harbour dug out of the tuff, a fishpond and rainwater cisterns. The residence was almost immediately destined to accommodate women of the imperial family in exile, from Julia daughter of Augustus to Agrippina the Elder, her daughter Livilla, Octavia wife of Nero and Flavia Domitilla. The archaeological area of Ventotene bears witness to the taste, luxury and technological skills of Imperial Rome during the Julio-Claudian dynasty.
VENTOTENE, SYMBOL OF A UNITED EUROPE 36 b – 4 P
536 b – 82 P
Ventotene is a symbolic place for Europe; it was here that the Manifesto 'For a Free and United Europe', better known as the 'Ventotene Manifesto', was drafted in 1941. Altiero Spinelli, one of its drafters, is buried in the Ventotene cemetery as is Ernesto Rossi. Here we find the story of the Political Confinement that provided the inspiration, thanks also to the characteristics of the island, for a project which everyone refers to as the reason for the birth of the European Union and the opportunity to defend its existence and values
THE FEAST OF THE PATRON SAINT 23 b – 4 P
510 b – 90 P
Santa Candida is the patron saint of Ventotene. On 20 September, the homes of the people of Ventotene open up to the faithful and tourists, who follow the band through the old town and stop to taste the sweets made by the islanders. In the afternoon, the Saint goes round the whole island in a small boat supported by a group of faithful, goes down to the port to greet the sailors, and then returns to her church accompanied by fireworks that invade the sea in front of the port.
